I have always dreaded the word MEDIOCRE right from childhood. I don’t know why I hate the word but my spirit, soul and body detest that word with a huge passion.
I cried yesterday when someone I respect so much called my services shoddy and mediocre. His feedback hit me below the belt and I let the tears flow freely without restriction. When I was satisfied with my swollen eyes and broken spirit…I picked up my laptop and read more on what it really means to be a mediocre.
I found out that mediocrity doesn’t really mean something negative as I had always had in my head. Mediocrity means something that is average quality but that you think should be better.
The first known use of mediocre was circa 1586
The word has retained its meaning over four centuries and still means something people like Abigael can relate with till date.
Signs to know if you are a mediocre
1. You worry more about appearances than outcomes: Little things get you so worked up and cause you to react. If you are given a task, you spend more time thinking about how the giver of the task will perceive your work or processes rather than focusing on the end result that your outcome will produce. The end should justify the means. Ditch your fears and concentrate biko!
2. You have stopped dreaming: Many have killed their dreams because they have become too busy with life and forget to dream. Dreaming about something doesn’t mean that you are going to achieve it that day or the next month but it has a way of keeping your heart alive. The mind is a magnet that attracts whatever is being desired.
4. You always look for short cut: Short cut a.k.a oona abujaaa (Yoruba) has killed many dreams and aspirations. Using short cut approach to tasks and issues can take the life out of your dreams. Stop it.
5. You fail to connect with people: I have discovered that I suck in being a teamplayer and I only function best in my own world and at my own pace which is not too right for a corporate environment. I am trying to carry people along and reduce my impromptu decision making style I have adopted since 1993. Sometimes my resolve works, other times I get scolded by my boss and I CRY OUT MY LUNGS.
There are other points but these are the points that resonate with my weaknesses and dried up my tears. I came to the conclusion that my services might be mediocre in nature because I have lost interest in the services I am rendering. I feel boxed up and I want to soar…please if you know where “interest” is sold please inbox me or comment below.
You can be anything in 2020 but you should never be a mediocre. Don’t be a person that is not very good at something or not very good at anything in particular. Invest in yourself and strive to be more than average.
I have made up my mind to BE EXCELLENT and patronise excellence. I will look at my operations and set higher goals. It was really awesome to be called a mediocre afterall. At least it produced a post and ticked off one point in my head.
