I say it with all sense of responsibility that you cannot be a graduate in Nigeria and not witness at least two or three successful episodes of ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike. Those people are bloody and skin wrenching time wasters. You may not hate them as much as I do if you went to a private university or are currently in one. I will give testimony at the Redemption Camp the day I get to finally understand their mission in this world. I was in 200 level in the university when I witnessed the most annoying strike that affected me directly. Brethren in the faith, the strike lasted for six solid uninterrupted months under the Goodluck Jonathan led administration of excellence.
I was at home for the six months and the worst mistake I have ever made in life was not to get a job or learn a skill during that time. My friends who did learn a thing or two are making it considerably well in their chosen paths. I was just home embracing and romancing my friends breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and occasional chop chop items I was using to keep my mouth busy. As a foodie that I am, I like it when my portion of food can feed at least a battalion of three adults combined in one.
I was gaining so much excess weight even tho I was most likely overweight before. I was at risk and I decided to finally do something meaningful with my life by losing weight. I started the weight loss journey with Sinmilioluwa my dear friend. The main reason I decided to lose weight must definitely be a topic for another post. Not this my scientific post that I have decided that must make brain.
I started jogging daily from 6:00am – 9:00am and eating fruits plus all the weightloss yada yada yadum I could lay my hands on. I registered in a gym but I pulled out because I felt the instructors were not doing enough to help my critical condition. I saw them as lazy people who will tamper with my weightloss goal. I was interested in revamping and or creating the body size I have never had. My goal was to shock all those guys who said they cannot date me because I was overweight back then in school.
One day after my jogging exercise, I wanted to wash my jogging outfits in preparation for the next day when I sighted a few drops of discharge on my breast. It was on my favorite breast – the left one. The other breast didn’t have any discharge on that day but it did after a few days. The discharge was very creamy and thick like pap or custard. I was scared but could not talk to anyone about it. I am that private with my life. I have always been an open secret.
I turned to my best friend (google) and checked out the cause, symptoms and the diagnosis there. I wanted to faint but continued to encourage myself in the Lord. The discharge continued for a while but it later stopped when I went back to school. I went to the clinic in school and found out that it was called ‘NIPPLE DISCHARGE”
Nipple discharge is the release of fluid from the nipple. There are normally 15–20 milk ducts opening onto each nipple and the discharge can come from one or a number of these ducts. Nipple discharge can be normal (physiologic) or abnormal (pathologic). For women who aren’t breastfeeding, the sight of nipple discharge can be alarming. But if you notice discharge from your nipple, there’s no reason to panic. While nipple discharge can be serious, in most cases, it’s either normal or due to a minor condition.
Bloody nipple discharge is never normal. Other signs of abnormality include nipple discharge from only one breast and discharge that occurs spontaneously without anything touching, stimulating, or irritating your breast. Deciding with the color isn’t usually helpful in deciding if the discharge is normal or abnormal. Both abnormal and normal nipple discharge can be clear, yellow, white, or green in color.
Normal nipple discharge occurs commonly in both nipples and is often released when the nipples are compressed or squeezed. Some women who are concerned about breast secretions may actually cause it to worsen when they repeatedly squeeze their nipples to check for nipple discharge. If you are guilty of this, please leave your nipples alone to rest for a while. You will be fine.
Possible causes of nipple discharge include:
• Birth control pills
• Breast cancer
• Endocrine disorders
• Excessive breast stimulation
• Fibrocystic breasts (lumpy or rope-like breast tissue)
• Injury or trauma to the breast
• Medication use
• Menstrual cycle hormone changes
• Paget’s disease of the breast
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding
You should go to a doctor within 1 to 2 days if you have nipple discharge and signs of infection like redness, swelling and discharge of pus. You should also see a doctor within a week if it happens on its own when your nipple isn’t squeezed.
PLEASE ALSO SEE A DOCTOR… If you’re age 40 or older, discharge is only from one breast, the discharge is bloody or pink or if you have a lump you can feel in your breast. If you are male and see any form of discharge either lizard brown or burgundy yellow… see a doctor ASAP.
My own discharge that I experienced in 2013 was caused by the uncomfortable bra I was using for my jogging exercise. It stopped when I went back to school because I stopped exercising with that particular bra. It was a relief for me but the importance of exercise sure outweighs a discomfortable bra.
